Crocheting is good for you

Farmwomen have always known how to turn the precious raw material of wool into works of art. It's not just about knitting and felting, but also crocheting. Crocheting is all about yarn and crochet hooks, which help turn stitches into patterns, and then into works of art.

Farmwomen have always known how to turn the precious raw material of wool into works of art. It's not just about knitting and felting, but also crocheting. Crocheting is all about yarn and crochet hooks, which help turn stitches into patterns, and then into works of art.

Wool may be used in a variety of ways and crocheting involves a lot of time and patience as well as creativity. Beginners start by learning ground stitch, which is then worked into fancier stitches. It is amazing how many different stitches can emerge from four ground stitches. Star stitch, puff stitch, chain stitch and granny stitch are some of the most well known. Really innovative crocheters may even invent their own stitches.

Depending on the type of yarn used, blankets, rugs, cushions, hats or pullovers may be conjured up. New wool is particularly suitable for crocheting carpets, cushions, earmuffs and such like, as it is thick and strong. Ist warm woollen fibres keep the cold out and can absorb lots of moisture without feeling damp. When it contains enough grease/fat, new wool may even deflect water. Sheep's wool does not easily absorb odours and may be aired overnight, which is really handy, don't you think?

Thanks to the right combination of stitch, colour and yarn, crocheted pieces can be unusual, elegant, humorous or trendy - there is plenty of room for versatility. Crocheting can be said to be the most stylish of the rural handcrafts.
