In the 21st century, the construction of a classic farm in South Tyrol can no longer be clearly defined. Historically, a traditional South Tyrolean farm consisted of a farmhouse, a stable and a barn. The farmhouse and the stable used to share the same building. Today, the animals are usually housed in their own building. In the barn the hay has always been stored as feed for the animals, and equipment and tools have been kept. The central place in the farmhouse was the living room, or 'Stube'. For a long time it was the only heated room on the farm. This is one of the reasons why most farm family life went on there. Today, the farmhouse 'Stube' is mostly used as a cosy lounge for spending time together. Regional differences in the traditional construction of farms have also developed within South Tyrol. Depending on the geographical location, different styles prevailed in some valleys, which are still recognisable today.
A journey through time within historical walls
Some farmhouses in South Tyrol look back on centuries of history. Many of them are still in good condition and have been carefully restored. Magnificent vaults, artistic frescoes and panelled rooms are hidden in the historical farms. Whether it's a former noble residence or a hunting lodge – they are all listed buildings. The loving furnishings give the farms a charming ambience. During a holiday on a historical farm in South Tyrol, you can experience the charm of bygone days without having to forego comfort and authentic farm life.
Farm meets design
Often the farm family decides to completely renovate the historical structure. For example, the old stone masonry is exposed and a new appearance is created with airy steel constructions and large glass surfaces. The original wooden beams have also found a new place in the modern interpretation of the restorations.
Many newly built farms today are impressive with their modern architecture and elegant design. The fascinating buildings are characterised by their clean lines, functionality and light-flooded living spaces. At the same time, the modern courtyards are perfectly integrated into the surrounding landscape. Through the use of natural materials the stylishly furnished holiday apartments and rooms create a unique living environment. From the traditional farmhouse to the modern design farm – there is no lack of authentic atmosphere on any of the holiday farms. Active farming and the personal care of the guests by the farm family are always in the foreground.
