Extreme holidays

Would you like a break away from civilisation, where nature sets the pace and the agricultural land can't usually be cultivated with machines? Then a holiday on an extreme mountain farm in South Tyrol is the right choice.

Would you like a break away from civilisation, where nature sets the pace and the agricultural land can't usually be cultivated with machines? Then a holiday on an extreme mountain farm in South Tyrol is the right choice.

They are in steep locations, mostly remote and high up near the tree line. Milk churns being transported down the valley by cable car are not uncommon sights here. On an extreme mountain farm, time seems to stand still and life is in harmony with nature. But what is spectacular to look at is associated with a great deal of work.

Difficult conditions

In order to measure the degree of difficulty of agricultural management, every farm in South Tyrol is assigned difficulty points. These are awarded using the following criteria:

  • Altitude
  • Steepness and slope of the areas to be cultivated
  • Distance of the fields from the farm and their fragmentation
  • Distance from the farm to the nearest village
  • Access road to the farm

Each farm is awarded points for the above criteria. The more a criterion is fulfilled, the more points are awarded. The score for the extreme holiday farms is between 115 and 157, while the general average in South Tyrol is 70 difficulty points.

Where nature determines the rhythm

On an extreme mountain farm in South Tyrol, guests can deeply immerse themselves in farming. The difficult weather and soil conditions ensure that even simple work becomes a challenge. The hay harvest alone has to be done by hand on steep terrain with a lot of effort. At the same time, a holiday on one of these farms means absolute relaxation and recreation for the guests. Here you can fill your lungs with lots of fresh mountain air and recharge your batteries. The cosy apartments and rooms are furnished with lots of wood. When you look out the window, a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains awaits you. In the farm shop you can enjoy many of the farm's own products: home-smoked 'Speck', warming herbal tea and full-bodied cheese. Try it out and experience a holiday of the extreme kind!
