A connoisseur's dream
From weeks focussing on specialities like asparagus and apples to traditional 'Törggelen' in autumn, a Farm Holiday in Nals provides the chance to enjoy a range of culinary treats made from local farm produce.
The 3,000-metre-high Texelgruppe mountains shelter the village from the cold north wind and allow apples and grapes to thrive in the flat valley basin. The combination of mild climate and sandy soil along the Etsch river provides prime conditions for the growing of a regal vegetable – asparagus. In spring, farmers deliver this tasty crop right from the field to the kitchens of inns and restaurants in the area, where they are made into a range of dishes by skillful cooks. While farm kitchens are busy preparing fragrant South Tyrolean apple strudel at the start of autumn after the apple harvest, the first chestnuts are about to ripen and fall from the trees on the slopes of the Mendel ridge on the western side of the village. They are roasted in a perforated pan over an open fire in late autumn and are served with the season's new wine, or 'Sußer', for a spot of 'Törggelen'. A Farm Holiday in Nals means lots of delicious treats involving apples, chestnuts, asparagus and wine.
Along the South Tyrol Wine Road
