Farm Holidays in Aldein
It's impossible not to experience one thing on a Farm Holiday in Aldein: a walk through the Bletterbachschlucht gorge, the 'Grand Canyon of South Tyrol'.
The way to the 'Geoparch Bletterbach' at the foot of the Weißhorn mountain, which has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2009, leads via Radein, a district of Aldein. Since the last Ice Age 18,000 years ago, water has carved a 400-metre-deep and nearly eight-kilometre-long gorge there and has revealed layers of rock that are not only interesting for geologists.

Dinosaurs in the Bletterbachschlucht gorge
The Earth's history may be traced back nearly 260 million years thanks to the rock that has been washed away. The geological changes shed light on volcanic eruptions, the rising and falling of sea levels as well as climate changes and their influence on plants and living creatures in the Dolomites. Along with lots of plant impressions and fossils of molluscs or snails, there are even traces of dinosaurs in the layers of Gröden sandstone, which will capture the interest of some younger visitors. Jewellery made from petrified fossils is often worn with traditional costume by women in this area. The most significant finds from the Bletterbach gorge are on display in GEOmuseum in Radein, which is on the main square right next to St. Wolfgang parish church.
Crossing meadows and forests
E-bikes may be hired there and in Aldein visitors' centre, which allow exploration of the mainly uninhabited countryside around the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The mountain farms, which keep livestock and grow vegetables to traditional methods, are worth seeing. It is not unusual to come across pastureland with grazing cows, goats, horses or even Scottish highland cattle on a bike tour through the local meadows and forest. Of course, a Farm Holiday in Aldein offers more than just e-bike tours – the hilly and mountainous landscape with its extensive pastureland and forest is perfect for hiking and horse riding in the warm season.

A holiday flat or room in Aldein does not just promise a varied and relaxing holiday in summer, but nearby Jochgrimm ski slopes will attract families in winter.
The small, tidy ski resort at the foot of the Weißhorn and Schwarzhorn mountains does not just include pistes catering for skiers of all ages, but features around 80 kilometres of cross-country runs and a natural sledge run. Furthermore, it can be a base for snow shoe walks or ski tours in the surrounding countryside. As it is a smaller ski resort, where there is no mass tourism, visitors don't have to wait for ages for lifts or in restaurants.
Tucked away from the world
A Farm Holiday in Aldein and its hamlets will guarantee equal amounts of adventure and relaxation throughout the year. Almost sealed off from the rest of the Unterland area, a much quieter life may be found at the foot of the non-identical twin mountains, the Schwarzhorn and the Weißhorn. Here at 1,500 metres aboves sea level, time seems to tick more slowly than elsewhere. The big world ends in Aldein and the little one begins.
