The 'Schildhöfe' farmsteads
Staying at a holiday flat or room in St. Leonhard in Passeier, you can get to know the rural traditions and customs of St. Leonhard in Passeier. The locals still wear their traditional costume on special occasions and the annual 'Almabtrieb', when the cows are led down from the mountain pastures, is all part of the age-old rural culture there.
Most farmhouses here are very low and made of wood. A few fortress-like buildings inlaid with ivory and decorated with old sundials on their walls stand out amongst them. These 'Schildhöfe' are unique all over South Tyrol. They used to belong to farmers who had won special privileges thanks to their military service in the Middle Ages. One of the eleven farms is in the district of Gomion in St. Leonhard, opposite the single-nave Maria Lourdes church from 1891. A trip to the 'Schildhöfe' should not be missed out on when on a Farm Holiday in St. Leonhard in Passeier.
The birthplace of Andreas Hofer
Another interesting farm may be found in St. Leonhard - a farm that plays an important role in the history of Tyrol. Sandhof farm was the home and birthplace of Andreas Hofer, a farmer and cattle dealer who three times led the Tyroleans to battle against Napoleon's troups in the Tyrolean popular uprising of 1809. Horses used to be changed at the Sandwirt when transporting goods over the border. Nowadays, the farm is a rustic inn and seat of the Passeier Museum, which affords interesting insights into life in days gone by and also sheds light on Hofer's life from different points of view. The two 'Kapellen am Sand' chapels at Sandhof are also worth a visit.

Hiking destination St. Hippolyt
The late Romanesque chapel of St. Hippolyt may be found in the hamlet of Glaiten at an altitude of 1,000 metres. The precious 14th-century frescoes inside the chapel may no longer be viewed, unfortunately, but the chapel still makes a popular destination: views from here don't just open out across St. Leonhard, but over the whole of the Passeiertal valley up to Meran.
