A village with a story to tell
The listed church tower of Altgraun, which rises up out of Reschensee lake, is now a landmark recognised far beyond the country's borders. The locals can still tell the story of this popular photo motif and often gaze wistfully out to the glittering waters. This is where their families tilled the fields and harvested hay for their cattle in the 1950s. When it became necessary to construct a dam to produce electricity, the village of Altgraun and a good part of the village of Reschen had to give way to water. The old church tower rising up out of the water provides the only reminder of their former home today.
These days, the villagers have made their peace with the Reschensee dam. The district has turned out to be the ideal destination for sports, with kite surfers particularly appreciating the wind that blows across the lake. The church tower in the lake attracts lots of tourists to the muncipality to admire the Reschensee lake with its impressive mountain backdrop.
Gentle tourism for those seeking peace and quiet
On a Farm Holiday in Graun im Vinschgau you can experience farm life up close.
