General description

The long tour on the Sciliar/Schlern boasts spectacularly impressive views of the unique Dolomite panorama. A fossilised coral reef and, as legend would have it, the gathering place of the Sciliar witches, the Sciliar is the symbol of the Dolomites.

Route description

The hike begins at the mountain station of the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm cableway and leads through the Alpine meadows of the Alpe di Siusi to the foot of the Denti di Terrarossa/Rosszähne mountains before snaking upwards to the pass of the Forcella Denti di Terrarossa/Rosszahnscharte. Below the Denti di Terrarossa, the path leads on to our first destination, the Rifugio Alpe di Tires/Tierser Alpl mountain hut.

The walk then takes us below the Cima di Terrarossa/Roterdspitze peaks, at first slightly downhill and after just a few steps, up a fairly steep slope to the high plateau. And now it’s just an easy walk to the Sciliar/Schlern. Good walkers in peak physical condition can opt to head up the Petz. This is the highest point of the Sciliar, where you will find sweeping views from the Alpe di Siusi over to the Sasso Lungo/Langkofel, Sasso Piatto/Plattkofel and the nearby Catinaccio/Rosengarten.

The route back is along the trail no. 1 which leads downhill over the north slopes of the Sciliar.

description to arrive at destination

The road to the landscape conservation area Alpe di Siusi is closed to private traffic from 9.00am to 5.00pm. During this time you can get to the Alpe di Siusi by the Alpe di Siusi cable car from Siusi or by bus from Castelrotto. You can descend from Compaccio at any time.
