An event celebrating Ahrntal grey cheese, called "Graukas" by the South Tyroleans, with tastings, guided tours of farm cheese dairies and special dishes.
Spicy, low fat, a bit stinky but very flavoursome: we are talking about Ahrntal grey cheese, which is called "Graukas" in South Tyrol.
Once a year, on Ahrntal Grey Cheese Day, everything revolves around this type of cheese, which is now well-known beyond the borders of the province. While Ahrntaler Graukäse farm cheese dairies offer guided tours and tastings, various restaurants and Alpine huts provide real treats for the palate with their special grey cheese dishes for a whole week.
The highlight of the Ahrntal Grey Cheese Days, however, is the Grey Cheese Festival in Steinhaus, where the best Ahrntal Grey Cheese is chosen, and visitors can look forward to cooking shows with chefs, a special Grey Cheese menu, and a cheese and farmers' market. There’s live music at the grey cheese event too.
