This duathlon combining pulling hay bales on sledges with ice climbing rekindles an old farming tradition in Passeier.
The Passeier Farmers' Championship is a duathlon which combines transporting hay bales on sledges with ice climbing. Even though participants will be competing, this event is mainly about having fun, and it revives an old farming tradition that has been practised here for many centuries. A load of hay weighing more than 150 kg, is pulled on a sledge for more than 400 metres. The route includes two steep slopes and a few flat sections. When the Haiziecher (‘hay-puller’) reaches the ice tower, he hands the race over to the ice climber, who has to climb a 25-metre-high ice tower. The competitors’ total time is determined as soon as the top of the ice tower is reached.
