Seventy different variations of this popular ‘ball-shaped fare’ are put on the table at the traditional dumpling festival in Sterzing, South Tyrol.
On the second Sunday in September, everything in the historic town centre of Sterzing focuses on the South Tyroleans’ favourite ball-shaped dish. All the well-known dumpling dishes are served on a row of tables over 300 metres long that run through the old town. Dumplings with speck, cheese, spinach, and liver, plus 'schwarzplentene' dumplings and 'Kaspressknödel' are just some of the 70 variations. Filled with apricots, strawberries or plums, dumplings can also be a delicious dessert. Bands from the surrounding area provide musical accompaniment to these treats for your tastebuds.
