Very popular is the hearty South Tyrolean 'Marende' snack, with homemade farm bacon, 'Kaminwurzen' (cold cured sausage), 'Geselchtem' (boiled pork) and cheese as well as some butter and tasty farm bread. In addition, a good drop of wine is served.
For warm starters, try homemade dumplings, 'Schlutzer' (ravioli) and 'Tirtlen' (giant fried ravioli) as well as soups, dumplings and gnocchi which lead the list of traditional dishes.
The series of typical South Tyrolean specialties continues with the main courses: hearty dishes such as 'Schöpsernes' (roast lamb), 'Bauernbratl' (farmer's roast), goulash, soured pork and homemade house sausages. As side dishes, tasty potatoes from predominantly own cultivation and spicy sauerkraut are served.
But also the many farm sweet dishes are worth a try: 'Krapfen' with various fillings from apricot jam to the so-called "Kloatzen" (dried pears) to poppy seeds. Schmarrn, "Kniekiechl" and strudels of all kinds also make the heart of many a sweet tooth beat faster. Whoever would like to try making the rural dishes at home, can read the recipes here.
