Farm Holidays in Tiers am Rosengarten

A Farm Holiday in Tiers is a holiday in King Laurin's 'Rosengarten'.

Anyone on holiday in Tiers will have them as a constant guardian: the Rosengarten mountains. During the day, the rocks radiate their noble Dolomite pallor, but when not hindered by bad weather, the rock massif begins to glow at sunset and the Rosengarten is in bloom.

This is how its name came about: according to an old legend, the realm of the dwarf King Laurin lay in a stonefield between the Rosengarten peak, the Vajolet towers and the Laurin rockface. He had a beautiful garden full of red roses there. One day, he feel in love with Princess Similde and lured her into his garden. Despite wearing a magic belt that gave him the strength of 12 men, he lost the battle against the men trying to get Similde back and fled through the Rosengarten under the cover of his hood of invisibility. But his steps left movements amidst the rose bushes and King Laurin was caught. After that, he placed a curse on the Rosengarten and made its beauty invisible to people by day and night, but forgot to include the time in between, dusk.

The Rosengarten always in view
Those wishing to see the 'Gartl', or 'little garden' today, can make use of a 'via ferrata' called 'Santnerpass'. This secured route of medium difficulty is still only recommended for hikers with Alpine experience and the right equipment. Fans of these 'via ferrata' routes will be able to choose between various options in the Rosengarten massif. But the area also features some horizontal excursions for those who don't fancy vertical climbs - the panorama path that meanders along at the foot of the Rosengarten group, for example. If you'd prefer to look at the Rosengarten rather than walk it,  then a walk from Weislahnbad to the Tschafon hut is for you. Halfway along there, water of the Wuhnleger, a little lake, reflects the Rosengarten in all its splendour – a popular postcard motif
But guests staying in a holiday flat or room in Tiers in winter will be catered for: the ski slopes of Carezza may be reached from the village in a few minutes  and Latemar-Obereggen ski area and the Seiser Alm are not far away. Besides this, there are lots of ski touring and snow shoe walking options. Sometimes, you can watch ice climbers bravely fighting their way to the top of frozen waterfalls.

Culture is provided ,too
When your urge to get active gives way to your need for culture, you don't have to go to nearby Bozen. In Tiers am Rosengarten itself, St. Zyprian's Chapel is worth a visit. This sacred building originates in the late Romanesque period and was converted in the 16th century. 'Steger Säge' visitors' centre of Rosengarten-Schlern Nature Park at the start of Tschamintal valley is also interesting. This sawmill is a rare example of a water-powered Venetian saw and was made fully working again after careful renovation. The living quarters of the master sawyer bear witness to Alpine artisanal traditions. As well as the saw, there is an audio guide with information about the saw, a birdcall station and an exhibition on the flora, fauna and geology of the Nature Park.

Summer in Tiers am Rosengarten is heavily influenced by culinary enjoyment. At several events, South Tyrolean specialities are served to views of the Rosengarten.

In June, 'Bergler Harass' takes place, which is a picnic at Wuhnleger lake featuring products from the village. 'Harass' is the South Tyrolean word for a chest made of thin boards – and the picnic is brought to the meadows in this type of chest. In July, another culinary event attracts guests out of their holiday flats or rooms in Tiers: at 'Bergler Tafel', a long table is laid at Proa, a mountain pasture with views of the Rosengarten, where guests can enjoy the rose-red spectacle and the menu. One last highlight is the 'Almabtrieb' festival in October. Cattle are led down from their mountain pastures adorned with wreathes, and a big party concludes the season.
