Animals leave the Seiser Alm grazing pastures after a long summer and return to their stalls in the village.
A lot goes on when the grazing flocks are driven down from one of the most beautiful high mountain pastures in Europe: festively-decorated cattle, horses, goats and sheep return to their home farms. Just like every year, this very important day for the mountain farmers of Seis and Kastelruth falls on Holy Rosary Saturday, the Saturday before Harvest Thanksgiving. Starting at 10 a.m., around 250 animals set off from Compatsch with their shepherds - the latter in traditional costume. The fist celebration takes place in Compatsch with alphorn blowers, ‘Goaßlschnöllers’ (whip crackers) and demonstrations of old peasant crafts. There will also be all kinds of specialities at the farmers' market. Around noon, the procession, accompanied by the sound of hundreds of cowbells, reaches the centre of Kastelruth, where there is another festival with traditional dishes such as ‘Krapfen’ (a kind of doughnut).
Starts at 10 a.m., animals arrive at 12 noon
