Did you know that sheep have superpowers? Wool has such versatile properties that farmers put them to use in lots of ways. Their positive effects may be transferred to your skin in an old Alpine wellness ritual. Enfolded in pure sheep's wool, body and soul will feel utterly pampered.

From head to toe

Doctors in ancient Greece were convinced of the beneficial properties of sheep's wool. Its natural fibres hardly ever crease, are self-cleaning and excellent at maintaining body temperature. When it's cold, wool keeps you nice and warm, while it has a temperature-balancing effect in hot weather. It is also adept at regulating moisture: its inner fibres absorb water, while the surface of wool is water-repellent. Lanoline, which coats each fibre of wool, is a really unique substance and it contributes towards wool's positive effects.
As you can see, wool is a great all-rounder. Thanks to its circulation-boosting effects and warmth, it can soothe aches and pains of the motor and muscular systems. Wool also has an anti-inflammatory effect that cares for the skin. A bath in soft, cosy sheep's wool will relax your limbs and help you to forget everyday stress and strain.

From sheep to wool

Sheep are undemanding, happy to wander around on steep terrain and provide people with milk, meat and wool. These factors make them popular farm animals in South Tyrol. Whether black, white or speckled, sheep love spending their summer holidays on mountain pastures. Before and after summer on the pastures, these good-natured animals are shorn of their coats. Shearing sheep is not an easy task, and the trick is to shear off as much of the coat as possible in one piece. A farmer can get on average of three to five kilogrammes of wool from each shearing. This can't be used immediately, though and has to be carefully washed by hand in clear water first. After thatn, when it's dry, it is teased and carded until it becomes fluffy. Now it's ready to be used and unfold its many benefits.
